Mucho Dinero
Upon arrival in Isla Mujeres Mexico this past Jan 07, I was surprised how much the local mates were now charging for their services. The wages were just shy or equal to that of a mate you could bring from the states. What are they thinking?? They are pricing themselves out of work. Let me just say up front I like these guys. They are fun to be around and are hard workers. I would not like to see them unemployed. However, the average daily wage in Mexico is less that $10.00 USD for office work and skilled labor. See Sector āCā Quintano Roo
http://www.mexicanlaws.com/STPS/MINWAGES2006.htm Remember the figures shown on the website are in Pesos (10 peso=1 dollar). How can it be that we are paying these guys $80.00 - $150.00 USD a day to work on our boats? The worst part of all, they think they are hot shots and deserve it. It has got way out of hand! To fix the problem I suggest each of us next season bring our own mate from home and hire a local kid for $5.00 to push a chamois around at the end of the day. The advantages are three fold. First your mate will speak English. Second, he or she will be on call 24/7. Not just show up in the morning and leave at dark. And third, you will be educating the next generation of sportfish captains. The other way to fix the problem would be to just simply all refuse to pay! Step it back down to the $30.00 - $50.00 a day we paid just a few years ago. That amount will still be way on the generous side based on the link above. I welcome any ideas and hope to hear from the rest of the fleet regarding this matter.
Meanwhile tight lines
