I'm considering leaving the "corporate world " and entering the professional captain/mate world. A little background, I am a 26 year old attorney. I've spent some time working after graduating last year and am quickly realizing that sitting behind a desk isn't for me. I mated one summer back in high school as a source of income and have spent the past five to six years fishing on personal and various friend's boats for anything from billfish to bottom dropping and everything in between.
I'm looking at getting a captains license in the near future to perhaps be more marketable. I've always wanted one and have simply neglected to get it.
My question is, am I crazy for wanting or attempting this career change? What does the market look like for captains or mates? I would love to travel so staying here in Texas is not a requirement.
I'm open to any and all opinions and suggestions. Thanks!
